Platte Colony Opens Specialty Genetics Finisher Barn: A Showcase of Innovation
Published: Dec 06, 2024
Platte Colony, located near Platte, South Dakota, celebrated the opening of its new 2,400-head finisher barn, a facility designed specifically for specialty genetics and niche market pigs. This innovative barn highlights the swine industry’s shift toward tailored production systems that meet the demands of evolving pork markets.
Platte Colony’s new 2,400-head finisher barn is a model of durability and innovation, designed with a 50-year lifespan in mind. Having been in the pork industry for over 40 years, Platte Colony understands the importance of building quality facilities that stand the test of time and serve multiple generations. Every component has been meticulously chosen for longevity and resistance to wear, featuring stainless steel, plastic, and precast concrete construction. The facility’s walls and ceilings are precast concrete, gating and waterers are stainless steel, and epoxy-coated floors protect slats from erosion over time—addressing common issues found in older barns. By prioritizing long-term reliability over frequent remodels and eliminating mild steel entirely, this barn sets a new standard for resilience, ensuring it remains a key asset for decades to come.

Built with Precision and Innovation
The barn was built with a focus on efficiency and specialization,
incorporating modern solutions to support advanced management practices.
Our team was proud to supply the gating, waterers, and feeder package
for this cutting-edge project. The facility is set to produce high-value
pork products, catering to consumer preferences in both domestic and
international markets.

A Collaborative Effort
Hank Wurtz from DuroPen, one of the key suppliers for the project, shared his excitement:
“We’re honored to have contributed to Platte Colony’s innovative
project. This barn exemplifies the future of swine production, focusing
on specialized genetics to meet evolving market demands. Our team is
proud to support such forward-thinking initiatives.”
The collaboration with DuroPen and other partners reflects the collective drive within the industry to push boundaries and set new standards for success.

A Strong Community Turnout
The open house event, held last week, was a tremendous success.
Approximately 300 farmers, vendors, and industry professionals gathered
to celebrate the barn’s completion. Attendees toured the facility,
exchanged insights, and marveled at the advancements it represents for
swine production.

Specialty Genetics: The Future of Pork Production
Platte Colony’s investment in this facility underscores the growing
importance of niche markets in the swine industry. By focusing on
specialty genetics, the barn is poised to deliver exceptional results,
paving the way for more tailored approaches in pork production.

Celebrating Progress
This facility not only demonstrates the potential of specialized
production but also serves as an inspiration for other producers
considering similar projects. It highlights the importance of
collaboration, innovation, and community in achieving industry
milestones.
Congratulations to Platte Colony and everyone involved in this remarkable project. For more updates and exclusive photos from the open house, visit Swine Web. Let’s continue celebrating and sharing the advancements that define our industry.

39 Determination of net energy and nitrogen balance in group-housed pigs fed diets containing varying levels of starch and fiber.
Abstract An experiment was conducted to determine net energy (NE) and nitrogen (N) balance in growing pigs fed diets containing varying levels of starch and fiber. Five diets contained corn and soybean meal (SBM) and decreasing inclusion rate of corn distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS; i.e., 35% to 7%). An additional diet contained corn, […]
