The U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC) is a 34,000-acre facility located near Clay Center, NE.. The work performed at USMARC supports research that is focused on solving high priority problems for the U.S. beef cattle, sheep, and swine industries.

As a Swine Unit Supervisor, you will:
  • Provide care and handling of swine in the USMARC pre- and post-farrowing area.
  • Supervise Ag Research Technician I (ART I) employees assigned to farrowing.
  • Coordinate efforts with other personnel.
  • Collect research data, ensuring treatment and experiment protocols are being followed.
  • Maintain sanitation of facilities.
  • Collaborate with UNL and Federal personnel.
This position requires some evening and weekend hours and work in inclement weather. Within the UNL system, this position is categorized as an Ag Research Technician II.

Minimum Required Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree in an agricultural related field plus two years of swine experience; equivalent education/experience considered.
  • Knowledge, skills, and ability to recognize, treat, and care for typical swine ailments associated with swine farrowing operations.
  • Knowledge, skills, and ability to utilize low stress animal handling techniques.
Preferred Qualifications
The following qualifications are preferred but not required
  • Associate’s degree in animal science or related agricultural field plus two years of swine experience specifically in farrowing sows and gilts.
  • Specialized knowledge and skills to provide advanced care and treatment to lactating gilts and sows.
  • Knowledge and skills to provide birthing assistance to farrowing gilts and sows.
  • Knowledge and skills to provide care, treatment, and processing of newborn piglets including castration, tail docking, teeth clipping, ear tagging and notching, and extensive data collection.
  • Pork Quality Assurance and Transport Quality Assurance training.
